Cadets Canada programRaye was invited to present to a group of teens and young adults from the Cadets Canada program (specifically the 803 North Shore Sabre Squadron). Entitled “Living in Space: Lessons Learned from Training Astronauts”, Raye outlined her experiences about training and working closely with astronauts, and how complex real practice in working with groups in the space sciences field and lessons learned from extreme situations, can be applied to groups in general.

 McGillRaye was invited to present as part of McGill’s Teaching and Learning Services MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) entitled Social Learning for Social Impact. In her talk “Unleashing the Power of Teamwork and Human Relations”, Raye outlined for students the many benefits that can be found when teams are given the best tools to tap into and unleash their best work through training to advance team accomplishment and effectiveness.

Dr. Raye Kass facilitated a 7 day Residential Graduate Laboratory on Designing Learning Experiences with a focus on “Thinking Traps” for students in the Department of Applied Human Science’s Graduate Program in Human Systems Intervention.

In October these graduate students will put on an interactive workshop on the same topic for the Lester B. Pearson School B community.

The founders of the Mars One Project, Bas Lansdorp and Arno Wielders, want to establish a human settlement on the planet Mars. Using private funding and the revenues generated by a “global media event” they hope to begin sending astronauts on a one-way trip to the Red Planet by 2023.

Dr. Kass was invited to give a lecture explaining team dynamics and conduct a group interview with newly exited crew members from Russia’s 500 Day Space Simulation held in Moscow.

This session, held at ESA’s European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, examined the team dynamics that evolved during the world’s longest space simulation with a view to examining the efficacy of various group training methods.

Space missions are key to maintaining world peace, according to James Kass.

Kass is a physicist, adjunct professor in Concordia’s Department of Applied Human Sciences (AHSC) and a consultant to the European Space Agency. He gave a lecture in AHSC on January 4 about his work and its prospects for the future.
